Effects of osteopathic manipulative treatment on the visual ability

NEWS / 22/03/2024

The visual system has a strong relationship with the musculoskeletal system.

The effects that a manual therapy intervention has on visual ability have been little studied in the literature.

Goal:

Evaluate the effect of osteopathic treatment on the visual system.

Participants: 27 subjects aged between 19 and 34 years (mean = 24.39; std dev = 4.56) with refractive error between 6 diopters of myopia and 5 of hyperopia, any degree of astigmatism, visual acuity minimum 20/40 OU.

Excluding patients with systemic and ophthalmic problems, with strabismus, pregnant patients, or with a history of head trauma. Finally, patients who have already undergone osteopathic treatment in the last 2 months.

Methods:
Patients were assessed: pupil diameter, retinoscopy, visual acuity, accommodative amplitude, ocular convergence, stereo acuity. Measurements were performed every 4 weeks from the previous assessment for a total of 3 assessments (T0, T1, T2). Subjects were randomized into three groups via the random org software. Group 1 was treated osteopathically with an approach focused on the resolution of the present dysfunctions, particular attention was paid to the cervical and cervical/dorsal levels. Group 2 was treated exclusively with a cranial approach focused on resolving the dysfunctions found, particular attention was paid to the orbital area, furthermore a light touch approach was performed on the rest of the patient’s body to maintain the subjects’ blindness.
